What: Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Young Adult Hardships

Trans young adults experience different hardships than other LGB youth and in doing so have some unique skill development and life negotiating choices that other young people may only experience with age or time. This webinar will explore the difficulties experienced, strengths developed, and places where providers and other adult allies and support trans youth.

Who: It will be host by NYAC staff in conjunction with a youth member of the NYAC, demonstrating youth-adult partnerships at its finest.

Youth relationships & Intimate partner violence

Join us Wednesday, January 19th for an in-depth look at youth dating violence, a type of intimate partner violence. NYAC is honored to welcome Melinda Coles, MSW, Director of Community Education for the DC Rape Crisis Center.  By the end of the 1-hour session, participants will be able to define youth dating violence, learn about its prevalence in LGBTQ youth relationships and debunk commonly held myths that surround it. Participants will learn to identify warning signs that youth in abusive relationships may exhibit and will learn ways create environments that are not only welcoming to LGBTQ youth, but that promote awareness about youth dating violence.  This webinar is appropriate for almost any audience as it will feature important take-aways for agencies working with youth in various capacities including education, health care, social support and more.  Please contact Shannon Murphy, Program Manager, if you have questions about whether this webinar is for you.  Email Shannon at shannon@nyacyouth.org or call her at (202) 319-7596 x24.

About Melinda:

Melinda Coles is the Director of Community Education at the DC Rape Crisis Center. She has been with the DC Rape Crisis Center since 2007. In this capacity, she has planned three Teen Dating Violence Conferences, planned the 2008, 2009, 2010 Sexual Assault Awareness Month events and facilitated presentations throughout the DC metropolitan area. She currently participates on a multi-disciplinary team that is working to bridge the gap for women with developmental disabilities and mental health issues in accessing Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence resources and continues to facilitate community presentations. Melinda received her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Social Work from Syracuse University.

Sexual Health Education and HIV Prevention with Young Lesbians

Join us Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 for a comprehensive and participatory webinar exploring HIV, STI's, and Lesbian sexual health. This webinar will hosted by NYAC's own shay(den) gonzalez in collaboration with Qui Alexander, Community Health Educator, from Philadelphia's Mazzoni Center. By the end of this one (1) hour session providers will be able to walk away have a better understanding of: young lesbians sexual health, the difference between cisgender and trans/gender non-conforming lesbian needs, best practices around prevention and protection, ways to begin engaging in these conversation with clients/youth participants, and a knowledge of where to gain additional resources. This webinar is a resource to any HIV tested, case manager, counselor, drop-in staff or community educator working with young people and looking to learn more about lesbian sexual health and risks.

About Qui

Qui Alexander is a black and Latino Trans man, originally from Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in the Growth and Structure of Cities. Now residing in Philadelphia, he currently works as Mazzoni Center’s Community Health Educator, teaching adolescents about healthy sexuality. He is very active in Philadelphia’s diverse LGBTQ communities as: a volunteer at the Attic Youth Center and co-facilitates Young, Trans and Unified, a weekly support group for trans and gender variant youth, a member Trans Masculine Advocacy Network for trans masculine folks of color, and he sits on the Grant Making and Outreach committee for the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund. In addition to all the fabulous work he's doing in his community, Qui is member of the Brown Boi Project—a community of masculine-of-center womyn, men, two-spirit people, transmen, and allies committed to transforming the privilege of masculinity, gender, and race into tools for achieving Racial and Gender Justice. Qui strives to educate and uplift LGBTQ youth, to give them power and agency in their lives and surroundings.
